Songs My Daddy Used to Sing

I put together "Songs My Daddy Used to Sing" about 1980 to honor the father of the wife of a long time friend and musician. In 1971 he brought his new fiancée to meet me and my wife. After dinner he requested that I sing some of my favorite songs for his fiancée, I sang with their encouragement until 2am and she commented that I sang many of the songs her father, from Oklahoma, once sang and she and her siblings enjoyed his music very much. After knowing her for almost 10 years, I wrote this song for her father, now deceased. Our own three daughters when they heard the song told me that it was the song that they should have written for me, but had not done so.

I love to hear the songs my daddy used to sing
Many years ago back in the hills.
He sang about 'Cowboy Jack', the 'Letter Edged in Black,'
'Jesse James', and the 'Mansion on the Hill'.

'Remember me, when the candle lights are gleaming'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.
'It would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreaming'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.

When evening fell and daddy come in from work,
He would sit and play with us kids.
He would pick his guitar with a baby on his knee
Then he would sing our favorite songs with glee.

'Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.
'Down the aisle with someone else you're walking'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.

When friends would come to call we would sit around and talk
About the folks that left the hills.
Then someone would say, 'Why don't you sing and play?'
He would pick his guitar and sing the whole night long.

'Go and leave me if you want to'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.
'Never let me cross your mind'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.

At length I left home, I set out to roam
To see what the world held in store.
I traveled here and there the world to me proved fair,
But I seldom heard my daddy's favorite songs any more.

'This heart would break in two if you refuse me'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.
'This world would end today if I should lose you'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.

I love to hear the songs my daddy used to sing
Many years ago back in the hills.
He sang about 'Cowboy Jack', the 'Letter Edged in Black',
'Jesse James', and the 'Mansion on the Hill'.

'Remember me, when the candle lights are gleaming'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.
'It would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreaming'
Was a song my daddy used to sing.
